Virat-Sourav Controversy: BCCI Unlikely to Take Any Step Against Virat Kohli Ahead of Test Series

After Indian Test captain Virat Kohli’s explosive press conference, BCCI is now in a huddle regarding how to come out of this muddy situation. According to the reports, the top brass of the sports body is now exploring options for a solution to this crisis without affecting the team’s mindset ahead of an important overseas series.

On Wednesday, Kohli during the official press conference before leaving for South Africa contradicted BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s statement by saying that he was never asked not to quit T20I captaincy and no such conversation ever happened.

Following the announcement of Kohli’s dismissal as limited-overs captain, Ganguly had claimed in several media outlets that he had requested Kohli not to abandon T20I leadership. “We (BCCI) had requested that Virat not step down as T20I captain. There was no plan to change captaincy. But he stepped down as T20I captain and the selectors decided not to split limited-overs captaincy, opting for a complete separation,” he had claimed.

This contradiction in the statement has put BCCI in shell shock which is clearly unhappy with the Test skipper’s comments. The board is currently taking things slowly as they understand that any rush in the decision can affect both the mindset of the players and the image of Indian cricket.

Meanwhile, Ganguly also decided to stay silent on the entire controversy. “I have got nothing to say. We will deal with it, leave it to the BCCI,” Ganguly told media persons in Kolkata.

Even though no one in the BCCI is in agreement with Kohli’s claim, they all recognize the tricky nature of the situation.  “Expert opinion was taken on how to deal with the sensitive matter as it also involves the respect of a president’s office. The BCCI knows that a Test series is round the corner and any hasty decision or statement from them could affect the morale of the team,” said a senior BCCI source.

Amidst the raging controversy, team India on Thursday departed for South Africa from Mumbai on a chartered plane. Under Kohli’s leadership, the team will play a 3-match Test series against SA starting from December 26.
