Virat Kohli to End His Tenure as RCB Captain after IPL 2021

Date:

Just two days after announcing his retirement as India’s T20 captain, Virat Kohli on Sunday declared that he will no longer be the leading RCB after the ongoing Indian Premier League 2021. He also made it clear that he will be continuing playing for RCB while focusing on his batsmanship.

On the eve of PCB’s first match in the 2021 edition of the IPL in UAE, Kohli posted a 2.9 minutes long video on Twitter to announce his setting down as the RCB captain. He said, “This will be my last leg in the IPL as captain of the RCB. I will continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. It was something that was on my mind for a while, as I had recently announced stepping down from T20 captaincy (of the country) to manage my workload.”

“I want to be able to be committed to the responsibilities that I am fulfilling and I felt I needed the space to be fresh, to regroup and be absolutely clear in how I want to move forward. This is just a little halt, it’s not the end of the journey,” he continued.

It was in 2013 when Kohli took over the position of RCB’s captain from New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori. However, Virat’s journey as the RCB skipper has been quite underwhelming and the team has not witnessed much success under his leadership despite having big names like AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle. The 60-65 win-loss record of RCB further proved why he was not appreciated as a captain as much as a batsman.

Former KKR skipper, Gautam Gambhir, on this occasion commented, “Yes, it does (the timing of the decision) surprise me. Just before the 2nd leg of the tournament. If you want to do that, you probably do it after the tournament. Because it makes the team unsettled and emotional as well.” However, he also praises Kohli for taking this brave decision.
