The Indian cricket team on Monday rewarded the Wankhede stadium groundsmen with a cheque of Rs. 35,000 after they sealed a 372-run win against New Zealand in the Mumbai Test. With this biggest Test win by runs, India marked the beginning of the Kohli-Dravid era.

In the series finale, team India successfully bowled out the Kiwis for just 167 within 45 minutes of the first session of the fourth day. The 1-0 series win helped India to regain their top position in the ICC Test rankings dethroning the Black Caps.

The team management decided to give this donation as a token of appreciation for not delivering an under-prepared track, a tradition they had started after the Kanpur Test. Coach Dravid gave Rs. 35,000 from his own pocket to the pitch curator of the Kanpur stadium for the sporting track leading to a thriller draw between the teams.

After winning the Mumbai Test, Dravid said, “I think it was good to finish the series as winners, came close in Kanpur, not able to get that last wicket, had to work hard here. This result seems one-sided, but right through the series, we were made to work hard.”

“There have been phases where we were behind and had to fight back, credit to the team. Great to see the boys stepping up and taking their opportunities.

“I know this result looks a bit one-sided but right through the series we’ve been made to work hard. There have been phases of the game where we’ve been behind and had to fight back. Credit to the team for pulling themselves out of some difficult positions,” he added.

Notably, India lost its number one position in the Test rankings in May 2020 after the records of the 2016-17 session were eliminated following the rules. However, after this latest series win, they have replaced New Zealand (121) in the top position with 124 points.
