On Monday, the BCCI confirmed that Rohit Sharma will no longer be a part of the upcoming 3-match Test series against South Africa after sustaining a hamstring injury. Sharma, who was appointed the deputy in the series, received the injury during their last training session in Mumbai on Sunday before leaving for SA.

The BCCI press release read, “Team India Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma sustained a left hamstring injury during his training session here in Mumbai yesterday. He has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match Test series against South Africa. Priyank Panchal will replace Rohit Sharma in the Test squad.”

Only last week, Rohit was named to replace Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain of the Test squad. However, the sports body has not yet announced who will be the vice-captain in the absence of Sharma for the tour starting from December 26.

It is quite possible that the selectors will go back to Rahane for the position of Test vice-captaincy. There is also a possibility of promoting KL Rahul who has already been appointed as Rohit’s deputy for the ODI series.

BCCI also announced the selection of the India A team’s captain Priyank Panchal as the replacement of Rohit Sharma in the 18-man Test squad led by Virat Kohli. Panchal plays for Gujrat and led the Indian A team in the recent unofficial Test series against SA.

Rohit has been a favourite to the injuries in the last couple of years. During the 2020 edition of the IPL, he witnessed a hamstring injury making him absent from the original squad for the Australia tour last season. He played only the last two Tests.

The latest turn of the events is also concerning for the BCCI as Rohit is now full-time captain of the white-balls team which will play against ab ODI series against SA from January 19. Meanwhile, India will definitely miss their one of the most prolific Test players for the Test tour.
