Pongal 2022: Know the significance of this day


Pongal is a multi day Hindu harvest festival of South India. This year it is falling on 15 of January 2022, it is dedicated to the Hindu sun god and it corresponds to Makar Sankranti. This festival under many regional names is celebrated throughout India. 

This festival is four days long and called Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal and kaanum Pongal.

The festival is named after the ceremonial “Pongal”, which means to boil, overflow and refers to the traditional dish prepared from rice boiled in milk with jaggery. Mattu Pongal is for worship of the cattle and their horns are polished and painted in bright colours, and garlands of flowers placed on their neck. Firstly the food which has been offered to the god is then given to the cattle and then to shared with family members. 

Pongal is traditionally an occasion for decorating rice powder-based kolam artwork, praying in temples, getting together with family and friends, and exchanging gifts to renew social bonds of unity.
