Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal and Naib Subedar Sombir (both posthumously) and Major Maheshkumar Bhure received the Shaurya Chakra from President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday. The prizes were presented in the Rashtrapati Bhavan during an investiture ceremony. Major Dhoundiyal was murdered in the Pulwama terrorist attack in Pakistan in 2019. At the occasion, his wife, Lieutenant Nitika Kaul, and mother, Saroj Dhoundiyal, were presented with the honour.

Major Maheshkumar Bhure was given the award for displaying “exemplary leadership and unparalleled courage” during an operation in which six top terrorist commanders were killed in Jammu and Kashmir on November 25, 2018. “Captain Maheshkumar Bhure cordoned the target house and achieved complete surprise, thereby trapping the terrorists. The terrorists attempted to break the cordon in darkness by lobbing grenades and firing indiscriminately. As they ran towards his position, the officer retaliated with deadly accurate fire at close range, thereby killing a terrorist and forcing the other terrorists to retreat back,” his citation read.

Major Dhoundiyal has been awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his role in an operation that resulted in the elimination of five terrorists and the recovery of 200 kilogrammes of bomb material. He was killed in a shootout with Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists in Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir, in February 2019. When he saw his friend injured in the firefight, he put himself in grave danger by personally evacuating him under heavy fire. The citation continued, “He then readjusted the cordon to prevent any escape and was able to pin down the terrorists.” Major Bhure (30) is from Maharashtra’s Osmanabad district. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pune.

In February 2019, Naib Subedar Sombir was one of the army men killed while combating terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. Three hardcore terrorists were killed in the encounter. One of them was a foreigner who was a terrorist in the ‘A++’ category, and he was shot down by Sombir in a close-quarters encounter. The Shaurya Chakra is given to members of the armed forces who have displayed exceptional bravery.
