Bangladesh Police identify man behind the Quran incident that sparked violence

The individual who incited the rioting that resulted in attacks on Durga puja pandals in Comilla and other areas has been identified by Bangladesh Police. The man’s name is Iqbal Hossain from the Sujanagar region of Comilla, according to Superintendent of Police Farooq Ahmed of the Dhaka Tribune.

On October 13, the 35-year-old allegedly placed the Holy Quran in one of the Durga Puja pandals, resulting in rioting in which three people were killed, according to Ahmed. The authorities identified Hossain after analysing video footage from CCTV cameras erected at the Durga Puja locations, according to the Dhaka Tribune. He has yet to be apprehended.

Hossain is seen in the video taking the Quran from a nearby mosque and strolling into a Durga Puja location. He was afterwards seen strolling away with Lord Hanuman’s club. On Thursday, the police will host a press conference when more information regarding Hossain will be given, according to Ahmed. Since last Wednesday, when a photo of the Quran kept at a Durga Puja pandal leaked on social media, attacks on Hindu temples have increased in Bangladesh. A mob set fire to at least 20 Hindu homes late on Sunday, causing damage to 66 residences. Over 450 alleged temple assailants have been apprehended so far in various regions of the country, according to the police. For the Comilla incident, forty-one of them have been arrested.
