Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam has again brought fresh air to the new controversy of UCC that is ongoing across the country. He was in Delhi to attend a meeting of CMs of various states and Chief Justices of various High Courts when he backed the idea of Uniform Civil Code. Talking to a News Agency, Sarma stated “Everybody wants UCC. No Muslim woman wants her husband to bring home 3 other wives. Ask any Muslim woman. UCC is not my issue, it is an issue for all Muslim women. If they are to be given justice, after the scrapping of Triple Talaq, UCC will have to be brought.”

The fresh debate around the UCC started after Jairam Thakur, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh stated that his government is open to implement the UCC in his state. Joining his neighbour, Pushkar Singh Dhaani, the CM of Uttarakhand said that his government will set up a high level committee to draft the Uniform Civil Code.

Himanta, who met Dhaami in New Delhi also said “I am a Hindu and I have the UCC. For my sister and daughter, I have the UCC. If I have UCC for my daughter, then Muslim daughters must have that protection.”

Hitting at the BJP-ruled Central Government, senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid asked for a clear definition of the Uniform Civil Code. He said “In the Constitution, there is a mention of UCC that there will be an attempt to apply a uniform civil code but a clear definition is never clear and what will be the impact. The government never said it will implement the Hindu code when it talks about UCC. The better practice of any religion is applied whether it is Islam, Christianity or other religion. They should tell what is the definition of UCC then only we can react.”

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) recently described the attempt by some chief ministers of the BJP-ruled states to introduce a UCC in the country as “an unconstitutional and anti-minorities move”.
