On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated projects worth Rs 20,000 crore in his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after the abolishment of Article 370 in the year 2019. The Prime Minister received a warm welcome in the Palli village of Jammu where he addressed an event on the occasion of the National Panchayati Raj Day.

After scheduling a visit amidst high security, the Union Territory received two attacks in the last 48 hours. In the region of Jammu’s Sunjwan, a CISF boarding was attacked on Friday. In this attack, one security personnel lost his life while two Jaish Mohammad terrorists were encountered and two militants were shot dead in the area of Kashmir’s Kulgam on Saturday.

Hardly hours before the arrival of Modi in the Palli hamlet, a blast happened in the agriculture field, a few kilometres away from the location, inciting concerns. According to the police investigation, they suspected that the blast was caused because of a lightning strike and a meteorite. On Sunday, during his visit, several Development projects were launched.

While addressing the event, Prime Minister said “The government has been focussed on bringing about wide-ranging reforms to substantially improve governance and enhance ease of living for the people of the region at an unprecedented pace following the “constitutional reforms” of August 2019, a reference to the abrogation of Article 370 and making the erstwhile state into a union territory”.

After Addressing the event, the Prime Minister launched the project of the Banihal-Qazigund road tunnel, a building cost of over ₹3,100 crores. It points to reducing the distance between Banihal and Qazigund by 16 km and decreasing journey time by one and a half hours. Three road combinations of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway will be built at a cost of over ₹7,500 crores which aims to improve the connectivity.

Praising the Prime Minister’s initiative, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha stated that “PM Modi has given a new industrial scheme in J&K. Since independence till now there was just ₹15,000 crore worth investment, now we have got a proposal to increase the figure to ₹52,000 crores while projects of ₹38,000 crores will be inaugurated by the prime minister. We expect investment to cross the 70,000 crore mark”.
