Must read

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar also known as ‘Veer’ Savarkar (brave) was a nationalist freedom fighter who is also credited to coin the term ‘Hindutva’. Some people call him a stalwart supporter of British colonization and others call him one of the ‘assassins’ of Mahatma Gandhi. Lately, Veer Savarkar was hitting news headlines after the Bharatiya Janta Party proposed Bharat Ratna for his bravery in his participation in India’s Independence struggle. This news immediately broke out controversy with the opposition parties going against BJP’s decision.

Not just that, last month, the North Campus of Delhi University saw an installation of the statue which has Savarkar in the middle of Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose on his sides.

Here are some interesting facts about Veer Savarkar that everyone should know:

  1. In 1911, Savarkar was jailed for 50 years in the cellular jail of Andamans, also known as Kala Pani, for revolting against the Morley-Minto reforms. After many mercy petitions for not participating in politics, he was released from jail in 1924.
  1. In his book, the history of the war of Indian Independence, Savarkar put down the guerilla warfare tricks used in the 1857 sepoy mutiny. But the book was banned by Britishers, Madama Bhikaji Cama published the book in Netherlands, Germany, and France, which eventually reached many Indian revolutionaries.
  1. Right from childhood, he was a Hindu Nationalist. Renowned author Jyotimarya Sharma demonstrated in his book “Hindutva: Exploring the Idea of Hindu Nationalism” that when Savarkar was 12-year-old, he leads with his schoolmates to take revenge against ‘cruelty’ committed by Muslims.
  2. After all, he was a passionate promoter of Hindutva, he never was a cow worshipper. He asks people instead of worshipping cows to take care of them.
  3. It was the time in the year 1964 when Savarkar declared his wish to attain samadhi. He started a hunger strike on February 1, 1996, he passed and passed away on February 26, 1966. He believed that his purpose in life is solved as India has acquired Independence.

The Nation still remembers the Veer.
