According to the National Center for Seismology, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 struck Nagaon in Assam about 7 a.m. on Monday (NCS).
The NCS tweeted informing about the earthquake in the morning in Nagaon that, “ Earthquake of Magnitude:3.0, Occurred on 10-05-2021, 07:05:52 IST, Lat: 26.49 & Long: 92.46, Depth: 23 Km , Location: Nagaon, Assam.”
This is Assam’s second earthquake of the day, following a 3.7 magnitude quake at midnight.
The NCS tweeted, “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.7, Occurred on 10-05-2021, 00:11:26 IST, Lat: 26.69 & Long: 92.42, Depth: 23 Km ,Location: Sonitpur, Assam.”
Assam’s Sonitpur has recently experienced a slew of tremors. Around ten earthquakes struck Sonitpur in a single day last month. One of the most powerful earthquakes in the state hit Sonitpur, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale.
On April 28, the entire northeastern area was shaken by tremors measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale. The quake jolted parts of West Bengal, as well as Bhutan and Bangladesh, which are neighbouring countries.
According to initial reports, three people were injured when the high-magnitude earthquake struck Dhekiajuli, near Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur. There were no immediate deaths confirmed.
Several central leaders spoke out in solidarity, assuring then-chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal of all necessary assistance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi weighed in on the situation as well.
Users posted pictures of shattered walls and windows, as well as cracks in the walls, to social media, demonstrating the earthquake’s effects.
The region is extremely seismically active, falling within Seismic Hazard Zone V, which is consistent with collisional tectonics. According to the NCS, the Indian Plate subducts under the Eurasian Plate.
The NCS on the Assam earthquake said, “The historical and instrumentally recorded earthquake data (NCS catalogue) reveals that the region is affected by moderate to large earthquakes and the most prominent events among those are July 29, 1960, Assam earthquake of magnitude 6.0.”
