On Wednesday, the Table Tennis Federation of India decided to leave table tennis star Manika Batra out of the Indian squad for the Asian TT Championship in Doha due to her incompliance to attend the national camp in Sonepat. The upcoming edition of the Asian Championship will be starting from September 28 and the Indian women’s team will take part in the game without world number 56th player Batra.

Following the Tokyo games, TTFI made it mandatory to attend the camp and made it clear that anyone not attending the camp would be left out. However, the Khel Ratna awardee had informed TTFI that she would be continuing her training with her personal coach in Pune.

So, despite Batra’s notable performance at the Tokyo Games, the federation did not consider her name for the national selection.

In the absence of star paddler, the lead of the Indian women’s team will be 97th world rank holder Sutirtha Mukherjee. Ayhika Mukherjee (131) and Archana Kamath (132) will also be the part of the team.

On the other hand, veteran Sharath Kamal (33) will hold the command of the Indian Men’s squad at the Asian Championship. His teammates will be G Sathiyan (38), Harmeet Desai (72), Manav Thakkar (134) and Sanil Shetty (247).

As China will not be a part of the upcoming TT event in Doha, the chances of the Men’s team to grab more medals is tall.

Notably, Sathiyan, Desai and Sutirtha joined the camp late as Sathiyan and Desai were busy playing in Poland and Germany repectively while Sutirtha was suffering from a fever.

Also, Manika has come up with match-fixing charges against the national coach Soumaydeep Roy who allegedly asked her to compromise matches during the qualifier rounds of the Olympics. TFFI has framed an inquiry board to investigate the matter.
