Led by Captain Dean Elgar, South Africa levelled the three-match Test series (1-1) by beating India in Johannesburg on Thursday. The Proteas chased down 240-run successfully on Day 4 to seal their first-ever win over India at the Wanderers.

Elgar remained unbeaten at 96 off 188 balls after starting the fourth day on 46 off 121. He also batted three hours on Day 3 where he had hit only two boundaries. However, after his partner Rassie Van der Dussen’s exit on Day 4, he took the charge of the match on his and led the way to a historic win.

Elgar and Van der Dussen’s partnership produced 82 runs before Mohammed Shami provided a breakthrough by dismissing the latter. Van der Dussen delivered one of the best chasing shows in only the 12th Test of his career.

“The basics of batting, bowling and batting don’t go away, we missed that in the first game. Saying that it wasn’t easy. Tough conditions we had to face as a batting unit. As a bowling unit, the Indians were on top at times. Massive respect to our bowling unit, they showed a lot of character. Always a privilege to represent your country,” Elgar told in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“I would like to think the knocks I take make me extra motivated to perform. Some would call it stupid and some would call it brave. The bigger picture is for us to win. We struggled to get a stable batting line-up and we had to be very patient. We’ve entrusted those positions to guys we feel can perform those roles and it’s great to see them pull it off. We now go to Cape Town with plenty of confidence,” he added.

Meanwhile, India coach Rahul Dravid said that India will bounce back to seize the third Test along with the series. “Honestly, we pride ourselves on wanting to do better and wanting to get better as a batting unit,” Dravid said at the end of the match.

“We certainly have to look to seize a few key moments and certainly when you get those partnerships, may make them a little bit longer,” the coach added.

Both the teams will now meet for the decisive Test In Cape Town from January 11.
