Rohit Sharma Steps into the Captain’s Shoes, Kohli and Jadeja Rested

Must read

On Tuesday, the BCCI officially announced the appointment of Rohit Sharma as the new captain of India’s T20I squad and the selection of KL Rahul for the post of vice-captain. Rohit Sharma will lead the 16-men squad in the T20I series against New Zealand at home starting from November 17 while Virat Kohli will not be a part of the team.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup Virat Kohli made it clear that he will retire from his position of Indian captain after the WC showing the reason for workload management. After the premature fall-out from the ongoing ICC tournament, the BCCI is now looking forward to a fresh start with the newly-appointed head coach and captain Rohit Sharma.

The board has made some notable changes in the T20 squad. Apart from former captain Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja has also been rested. Names like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Rahul Chahar are not also part of the squad.

Pandya’s exclusion from the team was not a surprise owing to the looming questions over his dropping form and bowling fitness. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar made it to the team for his experience despite his down sliding form.

Yuzvendra Chahal is an important inclusion in the new squad whose absence was felt strongly in the ICC even. Their impressive bowling performance in the IPL let Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel in for the T20I series. Venkatesh Iyer and Ruturaj Gaikwad were also included in the team after their memorable IPL stint in KKR and CSK respectively.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar looked quite hopeful about India’s white-ball future after this announcement. Taking about KL Rahul’s selection as deputy, he said, “KL Rahul has been marked as a future leader by the selectors. He has been the captain of Punjab Kings in the IPL and, above all, he plays in all 3 formats for India. I think Rahul playing in all three formats is the reason why he has been elevated to the role of vice-captain.”

“Rohit Sharma is absolutely ready to carry the baton forward. It is a new beginning for Indian T20 cricket under the leadership of Rohit,” he also added.

India will play a 3-match T20I series against New Zealand under Sharma’s leadership and 2 Test matches. However, the BCCI has not still finalized the squad for the Test series starting from November 25 in Kanpur.
