In their 1000th ODI match, India celebrated a comfortable victory against Kieron Pollard-led West Indies on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Skipper Rohit Sharma along with spin bowlers Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar dominated the Carribeans to produce a 6-wicket victory in the first match of the 3-match ODI series.

After last month’s disastrous 0-3 series loss in South Africa, India looked confident in this match against the West Indies. It was Rohit Sharma’s first ODI match as the full-time ODI Captain and he did not miss this chance to prove his class.

Despite not playing the entire series against South Africa, Rohit, opening in the match, exhibited no signs of deterioration in his form. He gave India a comfortable start with an excellent knock of 60 runs in 51 balls. He hit one six and 10 fours to tear apart the West Indies new-ball attack.

Rohit’s opening partner Ishan Kishan contributed to the 84-run opening partnership with his 28 off 36 balls. However, chasing a sub-par total, India struggled in the middle overs. Former skipper Virat Kohli played only 3 balls before Alzarri Joseph picked him in the 4th ball. Alzarri bagged both the wickets of Rohit and Kohli in the same over giving West Indies a window of opportunity.

Following the return of Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda took the responsibility of the match on their shoulders and added 62 runs for the 5th wicket. They remained unbeaten and pushed the team past the finish line.

Earlier in the match, Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar bowled fiery spells to restrict the West Indies batters within a total of 176 runs. Together, they picked up 7 wickets to stun the visitors. Jason Holder (57 for 71 balls) was the lone batter who stitched a 78-run stand with Fabian Allen for the 8th wicket to save the team from 79/7.

Talking about his team’s performance in the game, Captain Rohit remarked, “I don’t believe in a perfect game. You cannot be perfect. We want to keep getting better. All in all a great effort from everyone. We ticked all boxes. Pretty happy with that. With that bat we could’ve finished with not so many wickets, that is one. Could also have created pressure on their lower order.”

Notably, in this match, India became the first team to play 1000 ODIs. “It will be a historic moment as we play the 1000th ODI. I would like to congratulate all the players who have taken part in this long journey. It is an honour for me to lead the side in that game, it will be a privilege to lead the boys. Our journey has been fantastic over the years. So many players have tried to put their best foot forward, we will also try to keep raising the bar,” said Rohit in a video posted on BCCI.TV.

Indian players also wore black armbands in the match to condole the demise of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar on Sunday morning.

The two teams will again face each other in the second ODI in Ahmedabad on February 9.
