On Monday, former World Champion and two-times Olympics medallist PV Sindhu was named as a member of the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) Athletes’ Commission. The 26-year old Indian shuttler was appointed for the position along with five others who will continue membership till 2025.

The BWF in a statement said, “BWF is pleased to announce the six members of the BWF Athletes’ Commission 2021 – 2025: Iris Wang (USA), Robin Tabeling (NED), Greysia Polii (INA), Kim Soyeong (KOR), Pusarla V Sindhu (IND), Zheng Si Wei (CHN).”

The BWF also made it clear that some big names have been voted onto for the said commission. However, the decision around the Chair and the Deputy Chair is yet to be taken.

“The new Commission will meet soon and decide the Chair and Deputy Chair of the Commission amongst the six members. The Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission, following a vetting process as required for all Council members, will become a member of Council until the next elections in 2025,” the BWF added.

The World No 7 bagged the silver medal in the Rio Olympics 2016 and, in the recent Tokyo Games, she settled for the bronze. She was crowned with the title of World Championships in 2019 after beating Japan’s N Okuhara. Sindhu has also won two silver and two bronze at the prestigious tournament.

In the latest edition of the World Championships, Sindhu failed to defend her title as she faced a straight-game defeat in the women’s singles quarter-finals against the familiar foe Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan. She had beaten Tai Tzu at the same stage during the 2019 games.

Notably, Sindhu, along with World Championship runner-up Kidambi Srikanth and bronze winner Lakshya Sen, will be the top draws at the 2022 India Open which is scheduled to start from January 11-16 in the capital. The tournament is a part of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 and the prize money is $400,000.
