Legendary cricketer Kapil Dev showered praises to his teammates of the 1983 World Cup-winning team on the Stars of 83 show. On the show, he also stressed that he was not even half good without support from the seniors during the history-making tournament. He also added that all of his teammates were brilliant characters and a film could have been made on each of them.
“Character is the most important thing. If we pick up all fourteen and Yash, I think everybody has a character. When you want to achieve something as big as that, everybody needs to have a character,” Kapil Dev told on Stars of 83, a special show hosted by India Today.
The show was a special programme discovering the ‘real to reel’ journey of one of the greatest chapters of Indian cricket history. It featured the squad members of the 83 WC-winning team like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Syed Kirmali, K Srikkanth, Kirti Azad Sandeep Patil and the movie stars who portrayed them in the biopic.
“We all play cricket. If I look back, I think everybody has a character in the sense that they are not pushovers. You give them a lot of respect for not being a yes man, but they are ready to die and at the end of the day, they were all brilliant characters. You can make a movie about everybody. I was the captain but I think I was not even half good or even quarter without the support of seniors and Man and Polly,” Kapil added.
Kapil Dev-led team India made history in 1983 when they defeated the then cricketing giant West Indies to grab their maiden World Cup trophy. Riding on his cricketing acumen, Kapil was able to lead the ODI underdog India to victory against the champions West Indies.
The iconic victory at the Lord’s cricket ground was the start of a new cricketing era that led India to become a superpower in cricket. Since then, India has won two more World Cups including the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Men’s 50-over World Cup.
83, which is directed by Kabir Khan, will come to the theatres on December 24. The movie is a portrayal of the inside stories of the historic triumph against the mighty West Indies.
