As the Tokyo Games came to an end, India confirmed its historical presence with a total of 19 medals including five gold, eight silver, and six bronze medals. This is India’s best-ever overall medal tally in any Paralympics. In the previous Rio games in 2016, India had finished with only 4 medals with a total of 19 para-athletes. In fact, from 1968 to 2016, India won only 12 medals in the Paralympics.

On Sunday, India saw another gold and silver finish as shuttlers Krishna Nagar and Suhas Yathiraj stood on the podium with gold and silver respectively. The 22-year old defeated Hong Kong China’s Chu Man Kai in the Men’s Singles SH6 event to win the second badminton gold for India. Earlier, Pramod Bhagat managed to bag the first gold in badminton by overshadowing Great Britain’s Danial Bethell.

Suhas Yathiraj, the DM of GB Nagar, had to settle with the silver medal in the Men’s Singles SL4 event as France’s Lucas Mazur gave him a tough competition winning the gold. However, this gold-silver finish made the latest games historic for India.

As India celebrated Teacher’s day on Sunday, this win would be memorable for their personal and national coach Gaurav Khanna. Nagar remarked on his historic win, “This is the happiest moment in my life. I could not have asked for more on a Teacher’s Day than winning gold medal for my coach sir.”

A total of 54 para-athletes represented India in the Tokyo games which is India’s largest contingent to date. Indian athletes competed in a total of nine disciplines and 17 of them bagged medals in the games. Among the 162 participating nations India stood 24 in terms of the total gold medal count.
