After losing deportation appeal in Australia, Djokovic has withdrawn from Australian Open

Novak Djokovic’s chances of competing at the Australian Open were shattered on Sunday when a court dismissed his appeal against a deportation order.

Three Federal Court judges backed the immigration minister’s decision to withdraw the 34-year-old Serb’s visa on public interest grounds on Friday.

Djokovic, who has not been vaccinated against COVID-19, would most likely remain in jail in Melbourne until he is deported.

A three-year prohibition on returning to Australia is frequently included in a deportation order.

The visa was revoked on the basis that Djokovic’s presence in Australia could endanger the public’s health and “good order” and “could be counterproductive to other Australians’ immunisation efforts.”

Djokovic’s visa was initially revoked at Melbourne’s airport on Jan. 6, just hours after he arrived for the first Grand Slam of 2022. After determining that Djokovic did not qualify for a medical exemption from Australia’s guidelines for unvaccinated guests, a border official cancelled his visa.
