China found a fully preserved dinosaur embryo

Scientists have discovered that a preserved dinosaur embryo is preparing to hatch from its egg. The embryo was discovered in Ganzhou in the region of Southern China. According to researchers, the estimate has been made that the dinosaur is at least 66 million years old.

Also, it is expected that a preserved dinosaur embryo will be a toothless theropod dinosaur, or oviraptorosaur, and has been named ‘Baby Yingliang’.

“It is one of the best dinosaur embryos ever found in history,” University of Birmingham researcher Fion Waisum Ma, who co-authored a paper in the journal iScience, told AFP.

“This indicates that such behavior in modern birds first evolved and originated among their dinosaur ancestors,” said Ma.

“This dinosaur embryo inside its egg is one of the most beautiful fossils I have ever seen,” said Professor Steve Brusatte of the University of Edinburgh, part of the research team, in a statement.

Researchers believed that the creature was probably preserved by a sudden mudslide that buried the egg which further helped in protecting the egg from scavengers for eons. Also, it is considered to be grown two to three meters long if it had lived to be an adult. The specimen was among the several egg fossils that were forgotten in storage over the years. The research team has scraped off part of Baby Yingliang’s eggshell to unearth the embryo hidden within.

“This little prenatal dinosaur looks just like a baby bird curled in its egg, which is yet more evidence that many features characteristic of today’s birds first evolved in their dinosaur ancestors.”

Further, the team is going to study Baby Yingliang in greater detail by thoroughly scrutinizing the advanced techniques to image its full skeleton, including its skull bones, because part of the body is still covered by rock.
