Despite failing to defend their title, the Indian Women’s Hockey team is returning with the bronze from Women’s Asia Cup hockey 2022 after defeating China 2-0 in the third position playoff on Friday. India had suffered a heartbreaking loss in the semifinal against Korea before winning against China in Oman.

Hockey India on a Twitter post shared, “The medal comes home! Not the end we envisioned, but, nonetheless, a fighting display from our #TeamInBlue and we end the tournament in high! #IndiaKaGame #WAC2022”

Sharmila Devi (13) and Gurjit Kaur (19) assisted the Indian team to reel ahead of the Chinese team with their two goals. Sharmila Devi gave India the first lead in the 13th minute from the penalty corner after the Chinese defence saved Gurjit’s initial flick.

India continued to dominate China in the second quarter to repeat the solid performance of the last edition’s final at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat. The back-to-back raids by Indian players kept the Chinese defence under considerable pressure before Gurjit secured another penalty corner in the 19th minute.

Suffering two consecutive goals, China tried to rebound by securing a penalty corner which was saved brilliantly by the captain and goalkeeper Savita Punia. After the change of the end, China was more intent to put pressure on India but without any results.

Indians, on the other hand, kept attacking the Chinese defence in the fourth and final quarters but could not get past them.

Despite securing three consecutive penalty corners towards the end of the match, China was unable to bring a change on the scoreboard.

On this occasion, Kiren Rijiju congratulated the Indian women’s hockey team over a Twitter post. “Congratulations to the Indian Women’s Hockey Team on winning the bronze medal in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 after defeating China 2-0. The whole country is proud of their performance. May the team bring more laurels for India,” the post read.

India produced inconsistent performances in some crucial matches which can be attributed to the lack of practice after the Tokyo Olympics due to the Covid19 outbreak. In the semifinal, their sloppy performance against Korea 2-3 cost them their hopes of defending the title.
