Sushmita Dev, a Congress leader, resigned from the party on Monday and altered her Twitter profile to reflect her status as a former party leader. Dev wrote to Sonia Gandhi, the party’s leader, to offer her resignation, stating that she was “starting a new chapter of public service.”

“I cherish my three-decade-long association with the National Congress. May I take this opportunity to thank the party, all its leaders, members, and workers who have been my memorable journey. Madam, I thank you personally for your guidance and the opportunities you gave me. I value the enriching experience. I hope I have your good wishes as I begin a new chapter in my life of public service,” she said in her letter.

Santosh Mohan Dev, a veteran Congress leader, had a daughter named Dev. In 2014, she was elected to Parliament for the first time from Silchar.

Dev, the head of the Congress’ women’s wing, was among the party leaders whose Twitter accounts were suspended after they shared photographs of the parents of a nine-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in Delhi.

After meeting with the parents, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi uploaded the photos, which were widely circulated. Gandhi was blocked on Twitter after he posted the photo. In a show of defiance, Dev and many other Congress leaders swapped their display photos for Gandhi’s and shared the same image on social media.

Dev’s resignation comes after Congress claimed on Thursday that Twitter had blocked its official Twitter account, as well as the accounts of a huge number of party leaders and workers.

The blocking of multiple Congress officials’ accounts, including Gandhi’s, was done to safeguard individual privacy and safety after they shared photographs that breached Twitter’s guidelines, according to Twitter.

Randeep Surjewala, the Congress’ chief spokesperson, stated on Thursday that the Narendra Modi government will not be able to silence them by threatening Twitter.”How much will you scare Twitter at the behest of the police? This is not just an issue of freedom of speech, but it is the issue of raising the voice of a poor Valmiki Dalit girl for justice and bringing it before the country. Till justice is given to the poor girl, we will continue to raise this voice. The Modi government cannot cowardly suppress our voice by threatening Twitter,” he said, reports news agency PTI.
