As PM Narendra Modi announced his plan to give the Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar, a green push, the adjoining Yamuna Expressway will now be converted into an electric vehicle compatible highway.

The six-lane 165 long highway serves the purpose of connecting Greater Noida with Agra. It holds the title of the third-longest expressway in the country after being operational in 2012. The expressway is connected with the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway.

Earlier PM Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the Noida Airport will be built as a zero-emission airport. Following PM’s focus on a zero-carbon footprint airport, the nearby Yamuna Expressway will also be converted into a green highway.

The highway will be equipped with charging points and battery replacement facilities to become the first Indian highway to be competent in facilitating electric vehicles. Similarly, the airport is likely to use solar power as its primary power source.

Dhirendra Singh, MLA, Jewar constituency, Greater Noida remarked, “Climate change is real and our prime minister is determined to take stern countermeasures. One of such will be the green, zero-emission airport at Jewar and a highway that supports zero-emission cars to the airport.”

PM Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the airport on November 25. Both PM and UP CM will arrive at the venue in helicopters, according to the official reports. It is also expected that Modi will join the even around 12.50 pm and leave at 2.30 pm.

“The airport’s proposed footfall is over one crore and parking spaces will be made accordingly. Apart from an electric vehicle highway, it will be connected to the Metro rail network to bear such heavy footfall,” said Arunveer Singh, CEO, Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).

Notably, it has also been reported that the UP Government could rename the Yamuna Expressway after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. There is speculation that the announcement of the rechristening will be made following the airport carnival on Thursday.
