In the United States, the Delta version is still the most common, but Omicron is on its way to dethrone it and seize the top spot. Early evidence has shown that the severely altered form has a concerning resistance to vaccinations and higher transmissibility.

The Omicron type has expanded rapidly, particularly in the United States, which has already been devastated by the second wave of coronavirus sickness (Covid-19). According to a tabulation by news agency Reuters, hospitalizations have increased 45 percent in the last month, and cases have increased 40 percent. Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and the founder of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, told CNBC that Americans may not be prepared for the fast-spreading coronavirus variation Omicron.

He told CNBC last week that “we’re lagging behind what we need to get out to the American public,” adding that “completely vaccinated” should entail three doses rather than two. “We’ve arrived in Omicron territory,” he explained. His remarks came only days after Dr. Anthony Fauci, US President Joe Biden’s top medical advisor, indicated that a redefinition of what it means to be fully vaccinated is definitely on the table. “There’s no doubt that a booster is the most effective immunization,” Dr. Fauci told CNBC. He advised unvaccinated Americans to be vaccinated and vaccinated Americans to obtain booster shots, which have been demonstrated to restore protection.

He also warned against being too optimistic about Omicron’s severity, saying that while the hospitalization-to-case ratio in South Africa is lower than Delta, this could be due to underlying immunity from extensive past infections. “Regardless of how you look at it,” he said, “when you have so many infections, even if they are less severe, it overrides this minor to moderate decline in severity.” People are currently considered completely vaccinated in the United States if they have had two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine or a single dose of Jonson & Johnson vaccine. In the United States, the Delta version is still the most common, but Omicron is on its way to dethrone it and seize the top spot.
