On Thursday, the Union Government announced their willingness to commercially export Covid19 vaccines – Covishield and Covaxin – if sufficient stocks of the vaccines are available with the states, UTs and manufacturers. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, while interacting with the Ambassadors of Latin America and the Caribbean nations, on Thursday, said that India is ready to supply vaccines to the countries that require them.

The Government will decide the quantity of the vaccines to be exposed every month to ensure the absence of any sort of domestic shortage. Under the Vaccine Maitri initiative, the country has already sent 6.63 crore doses to 95 countries.

The vaccine supply has recently been resumed by the Government after allowing the Serum Institute of India (SII) to export 50 Lakh doses of Covishield to Nepal, Tajikistan, Bangladesh and Mozambique. The shipment is scheduled to reach Nepal and Tajikistan by this week.

According to the official source, “More than 22.72 crore balance and unutilized COVID-19 vaccine doses are still available with the states and Union Territories. The vaccine production is increasing and there will be surplus supplies. Keeping this in mind, a decision has been taken to allow commercial export of Covishield and Covaxin.”

The government also recently gave a nod to the export of 2 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine Covovax, produced in India by SII, to Indonesia. The jab is yet to be approved for emergency use in the country, as per the official sources.

The Health Ministry made it clear that nearly 1.2 billion doses have been administered with 82% of Indians receiving at least one dose and 44% being fully vaccinated.

Right now, vaccination in India is recognized by 110 countries across the globe and the Health Ministry is looking at increasing mutual recognition to promote ease of travel for tourism and business. The Ministry is also hoping that it will boost the economic recovery the world so desperately seeks.
