The government has declared a two-day national mourning period in honor of Lata Mangeshkar, who died today in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. This evening, at 6.30 p.m., the funeral will be held with full state honors.
The national flag will be flown at half-mast for two days as a gesture of respect for the great vocalist.
Lata Mangeshkar, known as India’s Nightingale, was hospitalized to the hospital in January with Covid-19 and pneumonia. The 92-year-old singer was admitted to the intensive care unit on January 8. She was put on ventilator support when her condition worsened on Saturday, despite having recovered from Covid.
Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar. She began her job at the age of 13 after her father died and she was left to care for her mother and four siblings.
Her father, a well-known Marathi musician and theatre performer, had a major early influence on the young singer.
Lata Mangeshkar’s debut Hindi song, “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu,” was recorded for the Marathi film Gajaabhaau, and she went on to work with Bollywood legends like as Anil Biswas, Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali, and SD Burman.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the loss of the Bharat Ratna awardee by tweeting, “Coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerize people.”
“Lata Didi’s songs brought out a variety of emotions. She closely witnessed the transitions of the Indian film world for decades. Beyond films, she was always passionate about India’s growth. She always wanted to see a strong and developed India,” PM Modi wrote.
