On Tuesday, a group of farmers and Samyukt Kisan Morcha representatives camped out outside the main door of the Karnal mini secretariat in Haryana.

Rakesh Tikait, Gurnam Singh Charuni, Balbir Singh Rajewal, Yogender Yadav, Darshan Pal, and Joginder Ugrahan were among the SKM leaders there, as the farmers made it clear that they will not return unless their demand for action against former Karnal SDM Ayush Sinha is met.

The government has, however, extended the suspension of mobile internet and SMS for another 24 hours, till September 9 at 12 a.m.

Lakha Sidhana, a controversial farmer activist from Punjab, arrived late at night in Karnal with a group of supporters. Sidhana criticised the BJP-led administrations at the federal and state levels for attempting to create rifts between Punjab and Haryana farmers in his brief speech.

“They tried to divide us on several occasions but Punjab is always with its younger brother Haryana and we will stay in Karnal until we force this government to accept our demands,” he added.

“The political situation of Haryana is different from that of Punjab and I salute the farmers of Haryana who are fighting against the [CM Manohar Lal] Khattar government despite repeated lathicharge and FIRs,” he added.

On Wednesday, a large assembly of farmers is expected in Karnal, according to reports that farm union leaders have urged Haryana farmers to travel to Karnal. Nishant Kumar Yadav, the deputy commissioner of Karnal, said that sophisticated security plans have been put in place to deal with any law and order crisis. Even though a massive deployment of police and security forces continues in Karnal, traffic on NH-44 has remained routine.
