IRCTC Changes Ramayan Express Staff Dress Code After Threats from Seers

Must read

On Monday, Indian Railways announced the withdrawal of the uniform of the serving staff of Ramayan Express followed by outrage from Hindu seers. Seers from Ujjain objected to the saffron dress code of the staff aboard and pronounced it an insult to the Hindu religion.

As a matter of fact, they also threatened to block the train at Delhi’s Safdarjung railway station on December 12 if the decision over the attire of the waiters was not evoked.

IRCTC, in a statement, made it clear, “It is to inform that the dress of service staff is completely changed in the look of professional attire of service staff. Inconvenience caused is regretted.”

The Railways also announced the new uniforms of normal shirts and trousers along with traditional headgears for the serving staff. They will also wear saffron masks and hand gloves.

Talking about the entire issue, Ujjain Akhada Parishad’s former general secretary Avdeshpuri said, “We wrote a letter to the railway minister two days ago, lodging our protest against waiters serving refreshments and food in the Ramayan Express in saffron. Donning a saffron attire with a sadhu-like headgear and wearing malas (necklaces) of rudraksha is an insult to the Hindu religion and its seers.”

“This is necessary for protecting the Hindu religion. We have taken a strong view of this issue in Ujjain,” he added.

Notably, Ramayan Express is India’s first-ever Ramayan circuit train aiming at upholding Indian heritage before the tourists. It started its first 17-day journey along its proposed route on November 7 from Delhi’s Safdarjung. The Ramayan Express is designed to take the pilgrims on a trip to places associated with Lord Rama and the Ramayan including Ayodhya, Prayag, Nandigram, Janakpur, Chitrakoot, Sitamarhi, Nasik, Hampi and Rameshwaram.

The train covers a distance of more than 7,500 km to bring the devotees close to the life of Lord Rama. The train is equipped with first-class restaurants, a library and shower cubicles for the convenience of its passengers.
