Mylab Discovery Solutions, a Pune-based startup, unveiled a home-based coronavirus (Covid-19) testing kit in India a day after the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approved its use. The CoviSelf kit, which costs $250, will be available in the market next week.

A pre-filled extraction tube, a sterile nasal swab, and one test card are included in the kit.

According to a statement from Mylab, the company is currently producing seven million test kits per week. The company plans to speed up manufacturing after the kit is released, producing around 10 million tests per week in the next 14 days, according to the statement.

General Balram Bhargava of the ICMR explained how to utilise the equipment, saying it is a simple, secure, and rapid process. “It takes two minutes to conduct the test and 15 minutes to get the result,” he explained.

Here is how to use CoviSelf

  1. Purchase the test from a pharmacy and instal the app on your phone.
  2. Create an account on the app and read the user manual thoroughly.
  3.  Because the data is maintained on a secure server linked to the ICMR database, this approach preserves patient confidentiality, according to Dr Bhargava.
  4. To determine the existence of an infection, the kit will only use a nasal swab.
  5. A test card, which is included in the package, will contain two bars labelled C (control) and T (test).
  6. The test is negative if the bar in the C portion changes colour. The test result is affirmative if the bars in both parts change colour.
  7. According to Hasmukh Rawal, managing director of Mylab Discovery Solutions, a positive test will take 5 to 7 minutes, while a negative result will take 15 minutes.
  8.  Run the test and then upload the image to the app. The results will subsequently be reflected in the application.
  9. Only symptomatic patients and close relatives of persons who have tested positive for the virus should use the home test kit, according to the ICMR.
  10.  Patients who receive a positive result must follow the recommendations of the ICMR and the Ministry of Health.

The kits will be available in three to four days, according to the ICMR director. “Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) home testing kits for Covid-19 will be available in the market in three to four days. It will help in the isolation of patients during initial stages of the infection as it gives quick results, “he claimed at a press conference on Thursday.
