Covid Updates: Covid-19 tally crosses six million mark in Maharashtra

Covid Updates: On Thursday, Maharashtra recorded 9,844 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to above 6,000,000. In Maharashtra, there have been 6,007,431 cases so far. On March 9, 2020, the state’s first case was filed in Pune.

The government has been able to curb the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Dr Tatyarao Lahane, director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER).“We have a population of more than 120 million in Maharashtra and till now 6,007,431 have been infected with the virus. This shows that we have been able to deal effectively with Covid-19,” said Dr Lahane.

773 of the 9,844 new cases originated in Mumbai. There were further 10 deaths in the city, bringing the total death toll to 15,348.

The second wave, which began on February 10 in Maharashtra, has resulted in 3,958,629 new Covid-19 cases and 68,499 deaths in less than four months, compared to the first wave, which saw 2,048,802 cases and 51,360 deaths in about 11 months.

Secretary-general of  Organised Medicine Academic Guild,  Dr Ishwar Gilada, said “We have 64% cases in the second wave as it was more infectious, virulent and also lethal compared to the first one”  He further added, “Even today, we are facing problems in mainly rural parts of Maharashtra in places such as Kolhapur, Raigad and Ratnagiri.”
