Young people contribute greatly to building the resilience of their communities. They have forever been the torch that opens pathways for the development of the nation, or the world at large. To honor such individuals who have made a difference not only individually but collectively as a group leading the world to the greater good, International Youth Day is celebrated every year on August 12.

Chosen by the United Nations, this year’s theme is ‘Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health’. According to the United Nations, this year’s theme emphasizes the importance of “inclusive support mechanisms that ensure youth continue to amplify efforts collectively and individually to restore the planet and protect life while integrating biodiversity in the transformation of food systems.”

The day was designated as International Youth Day by the United Nations in the year 1999 after the General Assembly endorsed the recommendation by the ‘World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth.’

“Through youth education, engagement, innovation, and entrepreneurial solutions, this year’s International Youth Day aims to provide a platform for young people to continue the momentum from the EYF in the lead up to the high-level Food Systems Summit,” the world body said on its website. The day also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness regarding the challenges and problems that the youth is facing today.

On International Youth Day, workshops, concerts, conferences, cultural events, seminars and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organisations take place around the world. International Youth Day recognises and celebrates the contributions of young volunteers and activists who are pushing for positive change around the world as youngsters serve as catalysts for peace and prosperity, not only in their local communities but on the global stage.

Today’s generation of youth is the largest in history, with more than three billion young people under the age of 30. Being half of the world’s inhabitants, a healthy youth generation has an unmatched potential to contribute towards the betterment of our society.
