Prominent Bollywood actor, Sanjay Dutt took to Instagram to remember his mother Nargis Dutt on her 40th death anniversary. The first Indian actress to receive a Padma Shri award, Nargis featured in 51 films including Mother India, Barsaat, Shree 420 and Andaz. And yet her end was a lot grimmer than her beginnings.

Commemorating the death anniversary of his mother, the actor on Monday posted a throwback picture from his childhood. In the picture, the late actor can be seen hugging the young Sanjay in her arms.

With a caption that says, “Not a day goes by when I don’t miss you maa”, both mother-son duo can be seen flashing their million-dollar smiles.

Sanjay’s sister also shared a similar picture with a caption saying, “Mother’s hug lasts long after she lets go…Mom it’s has lasted us 40 years #motherlove. Our love for you is forever”. 

In the post, the late actress was seen seated, surrounded by her children. 

Nargis died of pancreatic cancer in 1981, only days before the arrival of Rocky, her child, Sanjay Dutt’s first film. She was 51 years of age and left behind a meaningful assemblage of work that demonstrated she could play both a regal persona in an epic like Humayun and a spoiled cosmopolitan young lady like in Andaz. 

The actress gave up acting at the peak of her career to raise his family and ended up dedicating his life to her young children. . Her altruistic work procured her a seat in the Rajya Sabha in 1980. The Nargis Dutt Foundation, organized in her honor, has been working in the field of wellbeing, education and women empowerment for as far as 40 years. 

Meanwhile, Nargis was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The actress underwent the treatment of the disease in New York back then. Sunil Dutt and their children had flown to the USA where she was admitted to Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center for treatment. Post her treatment, she returned to India but her condition deteriorated.  She went into a coma and later died on May 3 in 1981.
