Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Monday commented that he is willing to lead the Indian team if given an opportunity in the future. “If given an opportunity, it would be an honour. I don’t think any player would say no. There’s no bigger feeling than that,” Bumrah said at a press conference.

“Be it any leadership group, I always look to contribute however I can, to the best of my abilities,” he added.

The pace spearhead has already been promoted to the position of deputy of the national squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa starting from January 19. KL Rahul will take the responsibility of the stand-in captain as the full-time captain Rohit Sharma has not yet recovered from his hamstring injury.

Virat Kohli has already declared his decision of stepping down from the position of the Test captaincy after the end of the Test series in South Africa. Now, selectors and the BCCI are on a hunt for his long-term successor.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are, of course, the frontrunners and both will be considered for the leadership position. However, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar had earlier suggested that selectors should consider grooming wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant as the future captain. Now, Bumrah is the latest addition to the list.

“Ready to do it if given an opportunity, but that’s something I don’t chase. In any leadership group, I always look at the situation, in the same manner, not to take any extra pressure that now I have to be overcautious. Taking responsibility, talking to a lot of players, trying to help them out in the best possible manner has always been my approach and it will be my approach going further,” Bumrah said.

Ahead of the South Africa tour, Rohit had been promoted to the Test vice-captaincy in place of Ajinkya Rahane but, later, he was ruled out of the entire tournament due to his injury. In the second Test in Johannesburg, KL Rahul led the team with Bumrah as Deputy in the absence of captain Kohli.

According to a BCCI source, the selectors are ready to appoint Rohit as a captain across the formats. However, considering that he will turn 35 in April, making him long-term is still under a big question mark.
