Makar Sankranti is a major festival of Hindus in India. The festival is celebrated on January 14 but during leap year it takes place on 15 January. This festival is majorly celebrated in India around the world. It marks the winter solstice when the shift of the sun leads to longer days. This is a major harvest festival and is dedicated to the sun god Surya and it also marks the first day of the sun’s transit into Capricorn from the Sagittarius zodiac sign and is observed in January.

This festival is also known as uttarayan from the day of Makar Sankranti. The harvest festival is celebrated throughout India, with different names and traditions. On this day, devotees take a holy bath in Ganga and Yamuna river and donate rice and lentils, In the belief that this washes away their sins, and many spiritual practices are conducted on this day, along with Makar Sankranti the Kumbh Mela also takes place every 12 years, which is one of the largest mass privileges. The sweet til and jaggery laddoos signify that people must stay together with love and peace despite their differences. People fly kites the whole day, and the whole sky gets covered with beautiful colored kites.
