On the Day 2 of the decisive Test in Cape Town Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah grabbed his 7th 5-wicket haul in Test cricket and provided India with a leading edge over South Africa. After dismissing the Protea Captain Dean Elger towards the end of Day 1, Bumrah continued this fiery spell on Day 2 and ended up with the figures of 23.3-8-42-5.

Bumrah on Wednesday picked up the wicket of SA top-scorer Keegan Petersen (72 off 166 balls along with Aiden Markram (8 off 22 balls), Marco Jansen ( 7 off 26 balls) and Lungi Ngidi (3 off 17 balls). The combined bowling efforts of Bumrah and Mohammed Shami helped India to put an end to SA innings on 210 and squeeze out a slim 13 runs lead for India.

Besides Bumrah, Mohammed Shami (2/39), Umesh Yadav (2/64) and Shardul Thakur (1/37) were also among the important wicket-takers. Shami took the wicket of second highest SA scorer Temba Bavuma (28 off 52 balls).

After finishing the session of day 2, Bumrah shed light on playing under the leadership of Virat Kohli. “I made my Test debut under him. It’s always wonderful that he is there to back us. He always gives a lot of motivation to all the bowlers. He brings a lot of energy to the side. It’s always good to play under him,” Bumrah told the press after India finished Day 2 on top.

“A bowlers development also depends on how the bowler works hard as well,” he added

“It’s special that I started my journey over here and came back here and played a Test match and picked up a 5-wicket haul. Personal performances are good, but when you make an impact and the team wins, that gives you more satisfaction.”

Notably, in Cape Town, Bumrah’s 5-wicket haul made him the joint-most for an Indian seamer after 27 Tests alongside Kapil Dev and Irfan Pathan.

Despite losing two openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal, India ended Day 2’s play on 57/2 with Captain Virat Kohli and Cheteswar Pujara on the ground. Kohli and Pujara will attempt to keep SA under pressure on Day 3 as India is aiming at its first-ever Test series victory in South Africa.
