After a discussion of the IPL Governing Council, IPL Chairman Brajesh Patel on Tuesday confirmed that the mega auction will be held in Bangalore on February 12 and 13. The league Chairman has also announced that the TATA group will replace Vivo, the Chinese mobile manufacturer, the title sponsor of the tournament from 2022.

Notably, two new teams – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – will join the IPL franchise this year making it a 10-team tournament. Sanjiv Goenka-led the RPSG Group won the rights for the Lucknow franchise after bidding Rs 7,090 cr. while CVC Capital successfully grabbed the Amnedabad franchise with a Rs 5,625 cr. bid.

BCCI has not taken any decision about the venue of the upcoming mega auction. It will consider the entire Covid19 situation in the country before making any call. The sports body is in touch with the government and all the stakeholders.

According to a source, “BCCI will see if caseload will drop or not and if he doesn’t then the board will have to create a cluster where there are four or five stadiums and no air travel is required.”

On the other hand, BCCI secretary Jay Shah stated, “This is indeed a momentous occasion for the BCCI IPL as the Tata Group is the epitome of global Indian enterprise with an over 100-year-old legacy and operations in more than 100 countries across six continents. The BCCI like the TATA Group is keen to promote the spirit of cricket across international borders, and the growing popularity of the IPL as a global sporting franchise bears testimony to the BCCI’s efforts. We are truly happy that India’s largest and most trusted business groups have believed in the IPL growth story and together with the Tata Group, we will look to take Indian cricket and the IPL forward to greater heights.”

“Yes, Tata group is coming in as IPL title sponsor,” IPL chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed the development to PTI.

Vivo had a Rs 2200 cr. deal to ensure the rights of the title sponsorship of the IPL from 2018-2022. However, following the Galwan Valley military face-off between India and China in 2020, the Chinese brand took a break for a year and Dream11 replaced it for 2020.
