India is continually recording more cases of highly infectious Omicron variant

On Thursday, India may have seen its first Omicron death, as the highly contagious disease spread to two more states, Punjab and Bihar, and the country’s highest single-day infection rate was reported for the second day in a row. Although over 1,200 Omicron cases of the new strain have been identified in India, no deaths have been reported until now.

Maharashtra reported the presence of Omicron is a 52-year-old man who died of a heart attack in Pimpri Chinchwad recently, but refrained from labeling him the variant’s first victim, instead of blaming his demise on his underlying health issues.

The state added 198 cases on Thursday, the highest single-day count in the state for the second day in a row, indicating that the omicron wave is approaching. The state’s total count of the variation has surpassed 450. On Thursday, India recorded 258 omicron cases, bringing the total to 1195. After Maharashtra, Delhi had the second-highest number of cases with 25, followed by Haryana with 23. Five instances were reported in Telangana, Odisha, and Bengal, while one case was reported in Bihar and Punjab. Omicron presently has a presence in 24 states and UTs.

“The death of this patient is due to non-Covid reasons. Coincidently, the National Institute of Virology report revealed that he was infected with the Omicron variant”, the authorities said in a statement. Because the individual received a Covid positive diagnosis, health professionals in Mumbai believe his death will be categorized as a Covid fatality.

Up to 46% of the entire 450 confirmed Omicron cases in Maharashtra have no overseas travel history. With the new variant discovered in 54 percent of Covid samples sent for genome sequencing, Delhi, which has recorded 25 new cases, appears to be on the verge of a communal outbreak, according to health minister Satyendar Jain.
