Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri on Thursday gave his reaction to the growing controversy between Virat Kohli and the BCCI by saying that the situation could be handled better.
“With good communication, this can be handled better,” Ravi Shastri said. “Virat has given his side of the story. It needs the board president to give his side of the story. It’s not about who’s lying and who’s not. It’s not right to jump in there until you know what was the actual conversation.”
The entire row started when Virat Kohli, who decided to step down from the T20I captaincy after the T20I World Cup 2021, was sacked from his position of ODI leadership. Post announcement of this decision, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly mentioned to the media that he had requested Kohli to consider the decision of his retirement as T20I captain.
However, just before departing for the South Africa tour, Test captain Kohli claimed that there had been no communication from the selectors regarding his dismissal from the ODI job and he was informed less than two hours before the squad announcement for the SA tour. What actually fueled the controversy is his revelation that he had no conversation with Ganguly on this T20I decision.
Following Kohli’s comments in the press conference, the entire situation became quite uncomfortable for the sports body. While Ganguly asked the press to leave the matter to the sports body, the BCCI refrained from making any comments ahead of an important overseas series.
Earlier this week, former Indian captain and selector Dilip Vengsarkar also expressed his unhappiness over how the BCCI President handled the entire situation. He also said that the BCCi chief should not have commented on captaincy and selection.
“The thing is that Ganguly had no business speaking on behalf of the selection committee. Ganguly is the president of BCCI. Any issue about selection or captaincy, it’s the chairman of the selection committee who should speak,” he said in an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times.
While the need for better handling and proper communication is being stressed time and again, we shall have to wait to see how BCCI reacts to this situation of crisis.
