After winning party elections, Deuba expected to become president of Nepali Congress

Sher Bahadur Deuba, Nepal’s prime minister, was elected president of the Nepali Congress on Wednesday during the party’s General Convention. Deuba received 2733 votes out of 4623 ballots cast, according to election officer Sunil Pandey. “The electoral body has yet to officially announce the results, but PM Deuba has been re-elected as party President for a second term,” Pandey added. In the second round of the election, he defeated Dr. Shekhar Koirala, who was contesting while other presidential contenders dropped out.

After no one received more than 50% of the vote in the first round, the second round began at 3:30 p.m. (local time). The candidates in the 14th General Convention election on Monday were Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Dr. Shekhar Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Bimalendra Nidhi, and Kalyan Gurung. Deuba received 2258 votes in the first round. Dr. Koirala received 1702 votes, Nidhi received 249 votes, Singh received 371 votes, and Gurung received 22 votes. The second round of voting is beginning because no candidate received 50% of the vote in the first round. 

According to The Kathmandu Post, Koirala has already reached out to both Singh and Nidhi, and the Central Election Committee has begun preparations for the second round of elections. Deuba, on the other hand, dispatched his close associate Bal Krishna Khand to meet with Singh, according to the report, which was based on party insiders. Deuba came up short of the required 82 votes to win the competition. The Grand Old Party will elect 13 office bearers, including the president, two vice presidents, two general secretaries, eight joint general secretaries, and 121 members of the Central Working Committee.
