Indian women’s hockey team had to quit their journey on Thursday in the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy after one of the squad members tested positive for the Covid19 virus. Following this development, India joined Malaysia who went to quarantine after one of its players, Nurul Faezah Shafiqah Khalim, tested positive for Covid19 upon arriving in South Korea.

“Yes, a player has tested positive so today’s game against Korea has been cancelled. The AHF will come out with a further statement on the matter,” told a source to the press on Wednesday.

India Hockey shared on Twitter on the same day, “With the health and safety of the players being paramount, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team’s match against China on 9th December will not take place.”

A day after the cancellation of their game against defending champions Korea, an Asian Hockey Federation source confirmed the news that India will no longer be part of the tournament. India is, like Malaysia, currently in quarantine though the name of the infected player is not disclosed to the press.

According to the AHF source, “Last edition’s runner-up India is out of the tournament due to a positive case in the squad. India will no longer participate any further in the tournament.”

Earlier on Monday, India’s second match with Malaysia was cancelled due to the Covid related issue in the Malaysia camp. Malaysia was forced out of the tournament in the same manner as India now.

India’s women’s hockey team is currently holding the ninth position in the world ranking which makes them the highest-ranking team in the tournament. India started this year’s journey by beating Thailand with 13-0 where drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur scored five goals.

The ongoing tournament was the first-ever tournament for the women’s team after finishing in the fourth position in the Tokyo Olympics. However, the shadow of Covid19 cost them pulling off from the tournament.

Originally scheduled for 2020, the Asian Champions Trophy was postponed multiple times due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
