Cristiano Ronaldo Scores 800th Career Goal Against Arsenal, Flashes Credentials to Rangnick

On Thursday, two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo took him past 800- goal mark while allowing Manchester United to secure a wild 3-2 win against Arsenal. The match was also the last match for caretaker manager Michael Carrick who ended his three-game stint as interim coach with an unbeaten status.

Even though the newly-appointed interim manager Ralf Rangnick was not officially in charge of the United, he was present at Old Trafford to get a glance of the life at Europe’s one of the biggest clubs.

The opening goal scored by the Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe left everyone watching the match bewildered. It became the most bizarre goal seen in a long time as Smith Rowe scored the goal when the United goalkeeper David De Gea was lying on the field clutching his foot, thanks to a ‘foul’ from fellow teammate Fred.

However, United bounced back through Bruno Fernandes’ goal before Ronaldo scored two goals to seal the victory and the seventh place. The 800th goal came in the 52nd minute of the match when Marcus Rashford picked out Ronaldo on the right side of the box. Ronaldo scored the winner and No. 801 as he took advantage of the penalty shot in the 70th minute.

“What can you say about him?” Fernandes said of the 36-year-old Portugal star. “He is proving game by game, season by season, year by year, he wants to keep being the best.”

“It was like an old-school classic and hopefully the boys will go on to enjoy more nights like this in the future,” Carrick said.

Ronaldo’s performance against Arsenal again proved that Rangnick would not be able to overlook his value in the team throughout his six-month stint as interim manager at Old Trafford. Rangnick was hired Monday as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s temporary successor for the rest of the season and received his work permit hours before the match.
