With the T20 World Cup 2021, Ravi Shastri’s 4-year tenure as Indian head coach also came to end and, lately, there have been a lot of speculations about his next move. As it turned out, he will be joining as a Commissioner of Legends League Cricket which is a professional event for former cricketers.

Shastri’s journey as the head of the Indian support team ended on a not-so-positive note following India’s early exit from the group stage of the ICC event. However, under his guidance, the Indian team achieved quite a few milestones. India even became the first Asian team to beat Australia in a Test series in their own backyard during his reign.

After a celebrated stint with the Indian team, it was expected that he would be associated with cricket in some capacity. There was also speculation that he could join the IPL franchises as a part of the coaching staff along with Bharat Arun and R Sridhar as IPL has recently included Ahmedabad and Lucknow on its roster.

However, a release issued by the LLC organization has put a seal on Shastri’s new role as its Commissioner. The former head coach promised of bringing both fun and serious cricket with this unique initiative. “it feels great to remain connected with cricket in the thick of the action, especially with the Legends of the game who have been champions in their own rights,” he said in the release.

“It is going to be a lot of fun with some serious cricket going. These stalwarts have nothing new to prove but they have their reputation in line and I can assure you, it will be interesting to see how they do justice to it. I am extremely thrilled to be a part of Legends League Cricket. This is a unique initiative and we see a very bright future ahead,” Ravi Shastri added.

Raman Raheja, co-founder and CEO of the league, said, “He (Shastri) has been a true legend of Indian and world cricket, bringing glory to India for years. We perhaps couldn’t have a better person to lead our cricket affairs and guide the League in the right direction. We look forward to the exciting days ahead.”

Former cricketers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia and England among other cricketing nations will be a part of this upcoming league. They will be divided into three teams representing India, Asia and the Rest of the World.

The first season of LLC is scheduled to be held in January 2022 in the Gulf. Andrew Leipus, the Australian philanthropist who was associated with Team India and the National Cricket Academy, has already joined as the Director (Sports Science) to keep a watch on the fitness of all the players joining the league.
