J&K police formed team to investigate killing of policeman Tawseef Ahmad Wani

Wani, who had joined the army two years ago, was killed in the Batmaloo neighborhood of Srinagar in the second such targeted attack in less than a month. An employee of the Power Development Department was slain there in October. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have formed a squad to investigate the death of constable Tawseef Ahmad Wani, 29, on Sunday in Srinagar’s Batamaloo neighborhood. Wani, a two-year veteran of the force, was killed in the second such targeted attack in the area in less than a month. In October, a Power Development Department employee was slain in the area.

Security forces searched the area shortly after Wani was killed, two days after an exchange of fire at a hospital a few kilometers from the crime scene, according to police.

Bantu Sharma, a member of the Railway Protection Force, was killed in the Kulgam district’s Wanpoh in September. A police officer and a civilian were injured on August 3 in Srinagar’s Sheraz Chowk when a police car was fired upon. Another police officer was slain in Kulgam four days later.

Inspector Pervaiz Ahmad of the Criminal Investigation Department was killed in June near his home in Nowgam, Srinagar. In the same month, an off-duty police officer was shot and killed near his home in Srinagar’s Saidpora neighborhood. During his visit to Kashmir last month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a visit to Ahmad’s family.

“Today at about 2015hrs Srinagar Police received information about a terror crime incident at S.D Colony Batamaloo area of Srinagar. Senior police officers reached the terror crime spot,” police said in a statement. Further, the Police added, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that terrorists fired upon one police personnel… In this terror incident, he (Wani) had sustained grievous bullet injuries and was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom.”
