Remembering M. Visvesvaraya on the occasion of Engineer’s Day

Every year, the Nation celebrates Engineer’s Day on September 15 to memorialize the birth anniversary of the greatest Indian Engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, popularly known as Sir M.V. He was an Indian civil engineer, lawmaker and the 19th Diwan of Mysore, serving from 1912 to 1919. He was born on September 15, 1861, in a small village known as Muddenahalli in Karnataka. He received the highest degree in civil engineering done from Pune College of Engineering.

Also, he was interested and had expertise in irrigation and flood disaster management  He was the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore alongside the chief designer of the flood protection system for the town of Hyderabad. Due to his marvelous contribution to the society, Government of India conferred ‘Bharat Ratna’ on this legend within the year 1955. He was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V and hence has the honorific “sir” before his name.

Narendra Modi wished all the engineers’ national engineer’s day through a tweet. He tweeted- “Greetings on #EngineersDay to all or any hardworking engineers. No words are enough to thank them for his or her pivotal role in making our planet better and technologically advanced. I pay homage to the remarkable Shri M. Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary and recall his accomplishments.”

Engineer’s day is the day of personalities who discovers the world with their pen and brains. The day is remarked to concede the efforts of various engineers who have made contributions in this field to make our present lives comfortable. It is celebrated as a tribute to all or any of the good engineers who have contributed in the past, who are directing our present and for the upcoming expertise waiting in line to show their skills.

Engineer’s Day is observed in several countries on various dates of the year. As of 19 January 1996, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations [WFEO]  has designated March 4th as ‘World Engineering Day for a Sustainable World’. The USA dedicates a whole week in February to Engineers week celebrations. The week is devoted to George Washington.

Let’s celebrate this day and laud our engineers, their works and their achievements.
