On Wednesday, the BCCI announced that former Indian Captain MS Dhoni will be joining the Indian T20 squad as a mentor in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The game is scheduled to be played from September 17 to November 14 in the UAE and Oman. The T20 World Cup-winning former Indian skipper is currently training with his CSK teammates in the UAE for the upcoming Indian Premier League starting from September 19.

Dhoni will be joining the Indian T20 team after finishing his stint with CSK in the 2021 edition of IPL. In a virtual press conference for announcing the squad, the BCCI president added, “Former India Captain @msdhoni to mentor the team for the T20 World Cup,”

“I am glad that MS has accepted this offer and he is keen to contribute to our national team once again. MS Dhoni will work closely with Ravi Shastri as well as the other support staff to provide support to Team India,” he added.

Although retired from International cricket since August 2020, the 40-year old  Dhoni has been an active part of the CSK team in the IPL. India even got its first-ever T20 World Cup in 2007 under his leadership as team India beat Pakistan in the finals. Commenting on his credibility as a mentor, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar said, “Under his leadership, India won the 2011 World Cup and four years before that, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup. It’s definitely going to benefit Team India.”

Despite mentoring the Jharkhand team in domestic matches previously, it will be the first time for MS Dhoni to work as a member of the Indian Support team. However, the BCCI president has made it clear that Dhoni will be a mentor only for the T20 World Cup tournament in the virtual meeting.

In the same conference, he announced the 15-man Indian squad which was full of surprises including MS Dhoni’s appointment.
