Following the decision of the government, the schools in the national capital are all set to reopen today on September 1. The schools are reopening only for the students of classes 9-12 after a long gap of 17 months following all the safety measures in place.

According to the new guidelines set by the government, schools must ensure all the anti-Covid measures to curb any possibilities of further spreading of the virus. This includes compulsory thermal screening, alternate seating arrangements in the classes, and 50% students per class. The schools have also been instructed to avoid overcrowding during the lunch breaks and at the day’s end. Every school must make sure that they arrange for an isolation room on the school premises.

However, the government has made it clear that no students will be forced to join the physical classes until the situation gets better. Also, teachers, students, and other non-teaching staff from the containment zones do not need to join the schools as per the DDMA guidelines. Some schools have decided to wait and observe the whole situation before making any decision on the commencement of the offline classes.

Last Friday, when the DDMA announced the decision of reopening the schools for classes 9-12 from September 1, experts went on questioning the decision. However, many educational professionals like DAV Shrestha Vihar Principal Suhashini Khushinder Nath welcomed this move by the Delhi government. She assured, “We would follow all necessary Covid-19 protocols as we did in February 2021 when the schools were reopened for a brief period of two months. Moreover, students will have both the options — online and offline classes.”

The principal of Kautilya Government School, Dr. CS Verma gave his remark on this matter, “It was very difficult to teach online we faced some issues — many students don’t have the gadgets and we can’t wait to hold the pencil in our hand all over again”.

Like the Delhi Government, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Assam, and Puducherry have also agreed on reopening the schools from the first day of September.
