India registered 2.08 lakh new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, continuing the downward trend, though the 24-hour count is somewhat higher than the number of cases reported on Tuesday. The overall number of positive tests now stands at 2,71,57795, with a daily positivity rate of 9.42 percent, according to the health ministry’s bulletin.

On Wednesday, India’s daily recoveries outnumbered daily new cases for the 13th day in a row, with 2,95,955 recoveries recorded in the last 24 hours. The number of active Covid-19 cases in India declined to 24,95591 on Wednesday, a decrease of 91,191 cases in 24 hours, as recoveries outnumbered new cases.

After 40 days, India’s daily case count fell below two lakh on Tuesday, with 1,96,427 new infections registered. The country passed the 2 lakh case mark on April 14, when the pandemic’s second wave was at its peak. Since then, the number of daily cases has steadily increased, with the country being the first in the world to report over 4 lakh infections in a 24-hour period on April 30.

The daily rise began to decline in the second week of May, reaching its lowest point on Tuesday.

The Centre has instructed states and union territories to ratchet up immunisation because the Centre has given them with stockpiles till June 15, despite clear evidence of the second wave’s peak diminishing. The importance of implementing containment measures in rural, peri-urban, and tribal communities, which were unharmed by the first wave but couldn’t withstand the second, has also been emphasised.
