According to the Union health ministry’s dashboard, India had 267,334 cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on Wednesday, with 4,529 new fatalities. With this, the total number of infections in the world has risen to 25,496,330, while the death toll has risen to 283,248.

The number of fatalities is expected to rise as the second wave of Covid-19 dies out in the region. People who were infected during the second wave’s height and are now fighting for their lives, according to experts, are likely to add to the death toll in the coming weeks if they do not recover.

For the fifth time in a row, the country saw over 4,000 deaths, despite the fact that the number of new cases fell on all days of the week except Wednesday. On January 12, India set a new record with 4,529 fatalities, surpassing the previous high of 4,468 deaths in the United States. On April 6, Brazil, the world’s third-worst-affected nation, reported 4,211 deaths.

Experts believe that new restrictions and prolonged lockdowns, especially in hotspot states, are to blame for the decrease in new cases of Covid-19.

In Delhi, for instance, the average positivity rate dropped by over 14% from May 8 to May 18, indicating a downward trend in the last ten days. In the same time frame, the positivity rate in Chhattisgarh fell by about 13%, while it fell by more than 10% in Haryana.
